Notes:

[a] This series is updated annually following the publication of relevant data by The Student Loans Company. An alternative measure, excluding student loans, is published each month. The equivalent series reference is available at www.bankofengland.co.uk/statistics/documents/iadb/notesiadb/mappingdoc.pdf. Further information can be found in Bankstats, July 2012, 'A new measure of consumer credit', available at www.bankofengland.co.uk/statistics/Documents/ms/articles/art1jul12.pdf.

[b] Mortgage Style Loans are no longer included in this series from April 2013 following their sale to a third party. For more information, see www.slc.co.uk/official-statistics.aspx.

[c] Other loans and advances include loans made through Government student support schemes (through the Student Loans Company). From the academic year 2006/07 onwards, tuition fee loans were made available to new students. Such loans are made in instalments. An increase in tuition fees in academic year 2007/08 has contributed to a rise in student loans. (30 Sep 2006 - 31 Mar 2023)

[d] Consumer credit consists of credit card lending and other loans and advances. Other loans and advances include loans made through Government student support schemes (currently through the Student Loans Company). For further details see Notes to Editors 4 in the March 2008 Lending to Individuals statistical release. (30 Sep 2006 - 31 Mar 2023)

[e] Consumer credit consists of credit card lending and other loans and advances. Other loans and advances include loans made through Government student support schemes (currently through the Student Loans Company). For further details see Notes to Editors 4 in the May 2008 Lending to Individuals statistical release. (30 Sep 2006 - 31 Mar 2023)

[f] The Office for National Statistics have recently completed a review of the Credit Grantors Survey and have re-examined the assumptions underlying this series. This has decreased the amount outstanding of credit card lending by £2bn and the amount outstanding of other unsecured lending by £8bn in Q1 2010. Flows of gross and net lending were not significantly affected. (31 Mar 2010)

[g] The Office for National Statistics regularly reviews its reporters to the Credit Grantors Survey. Due to a change in the reporting population, the amount outstanding of unsecured credit in the months of 2011 has decreased by £0.5bn from the levels previously published. Of this credit card lending decreased by £0.4bn and other unsecured lending decreased by £0.1bn. These movements have been adjusted out of the lending flows from January 2011. (31 Mar 2011)

[h] The level of other unsecured lending has been reduced by £0.3bn following the transfer of a loan portfolio to a non-resident company. The movement has been adjusted out of the net lending flows for May 2011. (31 May 2011)

[i] Due to improvements in reporting at one institution, the amounts outstanding decreased by £2bn. This effect has been adjusted out of the flows for January 2012. (31 Jan 2012 - 31 Mar 2012)
