Banknote machine updates for King Charles III banknotes

You should update your banknote machines before King Charles III banknotes are first issued on 5 June. Check with your machine manufacturer for more details.

Update machines to accept the King Charles III notes

If your business uses, or is responsible, for any machines that accept, sort or check banknotes, you need to plan for their adaptation to work with the new banknote designs.

We ask that all affected businesses, including retailers, transport and car park operators, financial institutions, and ATM operators etc, complete relevant machine updates before King Charles III banknotes are first issued on 5 June.

Machines requiring updates include those receiving banknotes, such as transport ticketing machines, self-service checkouts, gaming machines, vending machines, back-office machines and any other machines that are used to check banknotes are genuine.

For dispensing machines, we anticipate that cassettes can contain a mixture of both banknote designs in the same cassette.

In preparation, banknote equipment manufacturers are releasing updates for you to install in machines now. Please check with your manufacturers directly on their individual timelines.

If you have any questions about updating machines, you can email us at: CashIndustry.Enquiries@bankofengland.co.uk
