  • If you are due to finish school, university is far from your only option. Our Level 4 Apprenticeship Development Programme could be the ideal solution for you if you are:

    We have designed this 18-month programme to help talented individuals get started in their careers, and it could see you grow in a number of key roles.

    About the Programme

    Salary: £21,000

    Applications for our 2022 Degree Apprenticeship Development Programme are open and will be closing on Friday 14 January 2022 at 12pm.

    You will start the programme with a formal introduction to the various areas of the Bank and training sessions on essential skills. You’ll have a full induction to the Bank on joining, and will get the opportunity to find out more about the vast and varied array of work we undertake here every day.

    Alongside this, you will be enrolled on a part-time Level 4 Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship will provide you with the theoretical knowledge that will complement the skills and invaluable on-the-job learning that you will gain whilst working here.

    Studying whilst working can sound challenging. As part of the programme, you will be given dedicated study leave and the support of your local Line Manager to ensure you have sufficient time and support to balance your studies with your work. The Bank also has a dedicated Future Talent Team who are there specifically to support you throughout your programme.

     Level 4: Associate Project Manager (JustIT)

    Every project regardless of size needs to be skilfully managed to ensure its success. Associate Project Managers know what needs to be achieved, how it will be completed and how much it will cost to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget. To become a successful project manager, individuals need to possess excellent planning and risk management skills, alongside being able to communicate effectively to individuals.

    JustIT’s Level 4 Associate Project Management qualification, certified by The Association for Project Management, focuses on teaching the latest approaches and techniques. This will enable you to make practical improvements in how you approach your work, and set you up for future learning and career development.

    If you are successful in securing a place on this programme, you could be allocated to one of the following areas: Authorisations, RegTech and International Supervision (ARTIS), Banking, Payments & Innovation (BPI) or Prudential Policy (PPD).

    Level 4: Data Analyst (JustIT)

    The main role of a Data Analyst is to collect, organise and study data to provide business insight. As a Data Analyst you could be involved with managing, cleansing, manipulating, abstracting and aggregating data, and conducting a range of analytical studies on that data. You would play a key role in producing high quality data and supporting economists in their work and publications.

    Successful completion of JustIT’s Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship will gain you two certifications in Data Analysis Tools and Data Analysis Concepts.

    If you are successful in securing a place on this programme, you could be allocated to one of the following areas: Data Analytics Transformation (DAT), Risk and Operations or Supervisory Risk Specialists (SRS).

    Level 4: Information System Business Analyst (JustIT)

    IS Business Analysts are problem solvers who play a critical role in enabling business change. They can make a difference to business success and how a business operates. The role embodies early and regular investigation and analysis that ensures the right IS solution is chosen to meet the required business need. 

    If you are successful in securing a place on this programme, you could be allocated to one of the following areas: Banking, Payments & Innovation (BPI), Risk and Operations or Technology.

    Level 4: Professional Accounting/Taxation Technician (BPP)

    Finance and tax functions of the future will look very different from those today. Increasing requirements for automation, requires not only understanding the accounting standards/tax law, but now require skills in technology and dealing with data. Professionals with strengths in more than one of these areas and who have a strong problem solving mind-set can make valuable contributions to the development and operation of well controlled finance and tax systems and processes. In addition, as the activities of the Bank become more diverse, it is as important as ever for an accounting and/or tax professional to build a wide network and develop broad commercial acumen in relation to the business which enables them, as a trusted advisor, to contribute to creating a real and active partnership with different areas of the Bank, provide 'real time' support, and to add value that will assist in decision making.

    This role will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in all of these activities either in the tax or one of the other finance divisions, and learn the appropriate and valuable skills to operate as an accounting and/or tax professional in the future. You will learn how to apply your skills within a business framework, understanding the systems and processes used, as well as the standard accounting and/or tax practices employed. Your contribution to the team and organisation will be valued by your accuracy, efficiency and professional approach.

    This Apprenticeship will sponsor training towards Level 4 AAT, or Level 4 ATT.

    If you are successful in securing a place on this programme, you will be allocated to Finance.

    Who we are looking for

    We want people who are eager to learn and serious about building a career at the heart of the UK economy. You will also need to know what we do, share our purpose, and be genuinely motivated to join the Bank of England.

    In terms of grades, we will be looking for a minimum of five GCSEs at C (4) and above, including English and Math’s, and at least 72 UCAS points (either passed or predicted) from up to three A Levels or equivalent using the 2017 UCAS Tariff System.

    Data Science

    Data Science is a broad and fast-moving field spanning maths and statistics, software engineering and communications. Data Scientists blend experience and knowledge from a wide range of fields and organisations, and continuously seek to expand their range of technical skills. This apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to gain a degree, incorporating maths, statistics, software engineering and communications.

    If you are successful in securing a place on this programme, you could be allocated to one of the following areas: Authorisations, RegTech and International Supervision (ARTIS), Data Analytics Transformation (DAT), Insurance or Supervisory Risk Specialists (SRS).

    Digital and Technology Solutions

    We are responsible for technology that tracks all bank notes in circulation, records gold in the vaults, manages the Real Time Gross Settlement system that settles some £575 billion sterling payments and securities every day, and defends us from cyber-attacks. We can put you right at the cutting edge of these developments - as you’d expect, working here would give you exposure to experts in the field and provide a wide range of opportunities from development of systems that underpin our economy, to working on high profile projects. We have partnered with the University of Exeter, who will provide you with quality tuition as you study towards your undergraduate degree.

    If you are successful in securing a place on this programme, you will be allocated to Technology.

    Professional Economist

    The University of Kent’s School of Economics deliver the Professional Economist Degree Apprenticeship. The Degree Apprenticeship is geared to the needs of those working as economists in the private and public sectors. The curriculum covers all of the core material included in a UK Economics BSc degree. However, the distinctive nature of the programme is the applied, data based practical approach to the teaching and learning of analytical economics, and the development of the important skills of planning, team working, adaptability and leadership. The programme is based on interactive e-learning, on and off-site academic learning and support, and annual residential weeks at the University of Kent Canterbury campus.

    If you are successful in securing a place on this programme, you could be allocated to one of the following areas: Authorisations, RegTech and International Supervision (ARTIS), Insurance, International, Prudential Policy Division (PPD) or UK Deposit Takers Division (UKDT).

    Who we are looking for

    We want people who are eager to learn and serious about building a career at the heart of the UK economy. You will also need to know what we do, share our purpose, and be genuinely motivated to join us.

    To apply for the Data Science Degree Apprenticeship you will need at least five GCSEs at grade C (4) or above, including English and Maths. You’ll also need to have achieved or be predicted three A-Levels at BBB or above, or equivalent in IB.

    To apply for the Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship you will need at least five GCSEs at grade C (4) or above, including English Language and Maths. You’ll also need to have achieved or be predicted the following: A-Level AAB or IB 34/665 or BTEC DDD.

    To apply for the Professional Economist Degree Apprenticeship you will need at least five GCSEs at grade C (4) including GCSE Maths grade B (or 7) with and English grade C (or 4). You’ll also need to have achieved or be predicted three A-Levels (or equivalent) at BBB or above (or 120 UCAS points).

    About the programme

    We’ve designed this programme to help talented people gain valuable work experience at the heart of the UK’s financial system. 

    First of all, we’ll introduce you to the different types of work we do. Then, you’ll work in a team, getting involved in our policy, research and operational work. You’ll also attend regular training and events with your fellow Industrial Placement colleagues.

    If your performance is outstanding, we may offer you a place on our Graduate Programme or Postgraduate Internship.

    Operations

    This is our generalist scheme. It is open to students from any degree discipline. 

    You could be working in one of the following areas:

    Data

    If you’re interested in data, this is for you. Our data scientists engage with audiences and demonstrate insights that make us more agile, innovative and effective. 

    Applicants are usually studying a degree that involves numeracy skills. If you apply for this role, we’ll ask you to do an online Excel test as part of the recruitment process.

    Economics

    Applicants for this role are usually studying an economics, finance or other numerical degree. To apply, you’ll need to complete an online Excel test as part of the recruitment process.

    Get hands-on experience working with our technical experts and get involved in our projects.

    • providing technology support to colleagues across our organisation
    • understanding their needs and suggesting technological solutions
    • developing and presenting reports on change projects

    You don’t need a degree in Computer Science to apply. 

    Supervision

    This is open to students from any degree discipline. 

    This role involves supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies. 

    The type of work you would do could involve:

    You’ll learn more about our role in the economy and gain ‘on-the-job’ skills. 

    We’ll assign you to a team and you’ll work on a specific project. Our teams include Resolution and Insurance. 

    You’ll also have the opportunity to learn more by attending talks and networking events.

    The type of work you would do could involve:

    • supporting the UK’s financial system 
    • working in the financial markets
    • supervising international banks

    Penultimate year internship

    Length: Eight weeks over the summer
    Salary: £83.65 per day

    This scholarship offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience and contribute to work directly impacting the UK's economy. You will experience excellent development opportunities – from a comprehensive induction to the Bank, through to a range of talks and networking events. Our supportive and inclusive work environment will offer lots of opportunities to develop your skills.

    Are you who we’re looking for?

    We’re looking for a student from a Black, Mixed African, or Caribbean background with a household income of less than £50,778 a year that will join us on a Future Talent Internship in 2022. If successful in receiving an offer to the African-Caribbean Scholarship, you will follow our central internship programme at the Bank for 6/8 weeks depending on your year of study (please see internship tab for more information) and be awarded with scholarship funding of at least £5000 towards the costs of living and study for one academic year (2022/23).

    If you study a quantitative degree such as maths or engineering, this is for you. You’ll collect, compile and analyse data for publication.

    We would assign you to one of the following teams:

    Technology

    Interested in technology? You don’t need a degree in Computer Science to work with us because we will support you in achieving a Level 7 (MSc) apprenticeship in Digital and Technologies Solutions.

    We would assign you to one of the following technology teams:

    • System Development and Engineering
    • Service Management.

    Supervision

    You can have any degree to become a supervisor. Your role would involve supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies.

    • Resolution
    • International Supervision

    Postgraduate

    If you’re doing a master’s degree in Economics or Finance, this is for you.

    What you’ll learn

    You’ll learn the business and technical skills you’ll need as you start your career. You’ll have the opportunity to work with the firms we regulate to make them safer and sounder. As part of your role, you’ll learn to assess risks, prepare reports and hold firms accountable. You’ll also qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. We’ll support you through your professional studies with study leave, funding for study and a salary increase as you progress on the programme.

    Where you’ll work

    You could be allocated to one of the following teams:

    • Insurance

    Who we are looking for 

    We’re looking for someone who is about to graduate or has graduated in the last two years. You’ll need analytical skills and plenty of initiative, as well commitment to the role.

  • Length: The programme will make up the first three years of this permanent position. 
    Salary: There is a fixed salary package of £57,000 for the three year duration of the programme, plus competitive benefits and pension.

    Entry requirements:

    • Must hold (or expect to complete by end-2022) a PhD in any subject relevant to central bank policymaking

  • Length: Typically 12 weeks 
    Salary: £100 per day and pro rata holiday entitlement, based on 25 days per annum. If you don’t live in London then you’ll also receive an accommodation allowance of £100 per week during your stay. If you’re from overseas, you will be reimbursed for an economy-class return flight to London.

    Where you’ll work

    You will be working with Bank of England researchers, either within one of our Policy areas or within the Research Hub.

    What you’ll learn

    This internship offers an invaluable opportunity to experience and contribute to economic analysis, policymaking and research, at a leading central bank. By working on a research project of live interest to the Bank, with Bank of England researchers, you will see first-hand how research is conducted and utilised within a policymaking institution. You will also be given an opportunity to present your research, and engage with researchers and policymakers from around the Bank.

    The many opportunities to do research on substantive problems attracted me to the Bank. Even more importantly, there are policymakers down the hallway who are eager to hear about good quality research and implement policies based upon it – your research can have a huge impact here. Additionally, junior researchers at the Bank can afford to be novel and innovative in their work in a way that isn’t always possible at a university.

    I've found it is a much more team-oriented environment than a faculty at a university; there’s a sense that everyone is pulling together to make policy as good as it can be. What surprises me is policymakers' appetite for publicating quality research, and their willingness to act upon it.

    I've been a researcher at policy institutions throughout my career as I like to get inspired by current policy debates. I took a position as research advisor in the newly created Research Hub in 2016 as I was attracted to the renewed focus on research at the Bank of England. My job involves doing research and contribute to building a strong research environment in the Bank. I like that the Bank provides career tracks specifically designed for researchers. 

    The Bank has a very dynamic research community and provides an inspiring environment for researchers interested in research relevant to the Bank’s core operations. Being located in London is an added bonus as it allows for ample interaction with researchers in academia. Staff is very collaborative and friendly and there is a lot of diversity. There is ample scope for debate and for thinking outside the box.

    My reasons for applying to the Bank were similar to those that lead to my decision to study PPE. I am very interested in everything that shapes, defines and makes up our society and the Bank of England is an institution at the very heart of it. You get to do meaningful work with a real impact on people’s lives while experiencing working at a public, yet independent institution which means you get to enjoy benefits from both, the public and the private sector.

    The work atmosphere here is really great. Everyone in my team is happy to explain to me what’s going on and show me how things are done here. Most employees are very passionate and through their diverse backgrounds there is a sheer endless pool of perspectives to explore on highly relevant and current issues. This is also picked up by the Bank itself which really encourages you to continuously explore, learn and broaden your horizon.

    I was surprised how much trust I was afforded right from the beginning. I was given my own, quite substantial project to work on with a lot of freedom and discretion. For that I also get to research across the Bank’s databases which means reading through lots of interesting documents that contain information I usually couldn’t access. It truly feels like I am an employee here and am not excluded because of my intern status.

    I have a great interest in technology and problem solving. I have always had a great curiosity in how technology underpins the world of finance. The Bank of England provides me with a unique opportunity to not only work within the Bank, but learn where the skills I am developing at University fit in within the Bank and the financial world itself. The Bank has a clear drive in challenging and bringing out the best in their staff, a working environment I feel privileged to be a part of.

    Every member of staff is friendly and welcoming. Despite working in FMID, I now have a strong understanding of numerous areas within the Bank. Not only thanks to the staff members I had to pleasure of speaking with, but also the vast variety of seminars the Bank put on in order for all members of the Bank to share ideas and knowledge; resulting in an open and productive workplace. I have felt honoured to have the chance to talk with such self-motivated people who all strive towards the Bank’s common goal.

    As a first year Intern, I did not expect to be given as much freedom with my project as I was. Having a passion for technology, I was delighted to be given the opportunity to explore tools such as R and VBA. Implementing such tools in my project meant not only have I taken away a stronger understanding of how the Bank works, but also skills I did not expect to learn which will prove beneficial in progressing through my career. This was only possible due to the Bank’s passion for challenging and bringing out the best in people.

    The main reason I chose the bank is because I believed that it would be the best place to apply the knowledge I had learned in my degree to work. Over the past year I’ve felt I’ve been able to apply my degree and have also been able to build on my previous knowledge in a working environment.

    The thing that I have enjoyed most about my time working at the Bank is the atmosphere. Everyone I work with is extremely friendly and always happy to take time to explain anything that I might not understand.

    The main thing that has surprised me about my time at the Bank is the variety of work that you can get involved in. Over the course of the year I’ve been involved in a variety of different projects and work streams. I have found this very interesting and it has allowed me to build skills and knowledge across a broad range of subjects.

    To be able to finish work each day knowing that the work you have done has helped enable the Bank’s mission to promote the good of the people of the United Kingdom through financial and monetary stability, is something that you could only do at the Bank of England.

    The Bank has a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise across different fields, meaning you can develop your technical skills and further yourself by working alongside these experts, who are always open and happy to offer advice and guidance.

    Working at a historic and national institution, gives you the chance to make a positive contribution to society and gives you a great sense of actually making a difference to society. Being in Technology, which underpins all aspects of the Bank’s mission, means you can get involved in a variety of fascinating, fast paced workstreams, which are vital to the functioning of the Bank.

    I like that The Bank operates in a collaborative and open environment, with colleagues always willing to share experience and information, making you feel welcomed and valued from the very start.

    One of the things that surprised me the most was how open everyone is! Whether you just want to have a catch up with someone who may be able to help you with a project, or enquiring about the different networks that exist at the Bank, there is always a friendly face eager and willing to help you in whatever way they can. The Bank is full of people who truly care about you as a person and your career at the Bank.

    Having studied Economics at University, I was keen to see how the theory worked in practice. I chose to apply to the Bank because of the influence it has on the UK Economy as well as the individual perspective I myself could gain being so centrally involved in UK financial stability. I wanted something challenging, interesting, current and with purpose and felt that the Bank offered just that.

    The people that you meet at the Bank are from a range of backgrounds with a wealth of specialist knowledge and years of experience. The collaborative nature of work here is definitely a stand out feature and an element that allows for an enjoyable working environment. Many are willing to share their expertise whilst also encouraging input from colleagues all around. The culture here allows for easy interaction between individuals and for ideas to be easily shared. You’re encouraged to be inquisitive and for that reason, you are constantly learning! 

    The projects and areas of work that you get involved with are incredibly varied and therefore no two days are the exact same. With Specialism research pieces focused on the key risk areas faced by insurance, work is both challenging and thought provoking. Alongside the opportunities offered to liaise with industry executives in ongoing supervision, working here provides ample opportunity to develop both soft and hard skills. The level of responsibility that you’re given so early on within your career is another great aspect of working here.

    I choose the Bank for a number of reasons. Everyone I spoke to said how collaborative and friendly Bank staff were and how much the values really affected the culture. I really wanted to work in technology but not in the technology sector and I had already worked in finance services so it felt like the perfect fit. There was a strong emphasis placed on learning and development, not only within the graduate scheme with the Central Banking Qualification but also on the job, with plenty of opportunities for shadowing and cross-divisional working.

    I really enjoy the culture in the Bank, there is a real emphasis placed on wellbeing and taking an initiative not only in the work we do but also in the way that we work. A lot of the work I do has a unique sector overview and could not be done in the same way anyway else but requires collaboration with other organisations. I feel that the work I do has real world impact and its working towards the mission of the Bank. You cannot also help but enjoy working in a building like the Bank.

    I thought the culture of the Bank would be much more traditional and it would be harder to get across ideas. A lot of staff members work from home or hot desk and there are plenty of opportunities to express ideas for work and the Bank as a whole.  There is a register for opportunities across the Bank and you can shadow just about any team within the Bank. I did not expect to have much responsibility in my first year but I am a team lead on a project and produce reports going to senior management.

Janet Siwoku

    I chose to do a Degree Apprenticeship because I wanted to enhance my technical knowledge of organisations and the wider macro and micro economy alongside my practical day-to-day experience. 

    It has definitely increased my technical knowledge and helped me to view the organisation in a holistic way. I’ve studying modules such as:

    • How organisations behave
    • The business world
    • Money matters
    • Managing business operations and technology at work 

    The study ties in closely with my day-to-day role and that’s highly advantageous. I knew it would improve my analytical skill set but it has also massively improved my time management and my ability to prioritise.

    As part of completing this Degree Apprenticeship, I’ve also been given membership to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). This is an accredited professional institution for leadership and management.

    One of the main reasons I undertook this degree is because the Bank of England fully fund it. So I’m not indebted to any student loan. 

    I usually study for one day during my working week. Undertaking a Degree Apprenticeship alongside a full time job is a huge commitment and requires a lot of hard work. But I would definitely encourage it.

    I picked an apprenticeship over going to university. Firstly because I wasn’t 100% sure what I was most passionate about when I left school. And secondly, because I knew I could gain valuable work experience at a great organization while gaining a high quality degree.

    I chose this course because I knew I would learn how to enhance my workplace productivity and increase my proficiency in a number of skills. So far, I have learnt and applied:

    • specialised programming techniques across various languages
    • the processes of IT project management
    • some techniques in web development. 

    I’ve always been interested in tech and the benefits  it can have on workplaces. I knew that by taking on this course, I would increase my skills massively and be able to apply them at the Bank of England. 

    The course was fully funded and I got lots of support. I also had the opportunity to visit the university for a residential trip, so I got some experience of student life.

    This degree has had a huge impact on me personally. It has motivated me to learn new skills that can aid the work that I do here.

    I joined the Bank for many reasons. The mission of the Bank is completely unique - there is nowhere else in the country where you are supporting monetary and financial stability, the work is so current and forever evolving, keeping you interested every day. I always wanted a career where I felt like I was giving back and that is exactly what the Bank of England does. The Bank does not work for profit,  it works to help the people of the UK. 
     
    The culture at the Bank is incredible. Everyone is incredibly welcoming and always happy to help in any way they can. The work is really collaborative, you get to work with and meet people from all over the Bank and interesting external contacts from many different places in the world! Wellbeing is a top priority in the Bank, something which you do not get in every workplace. Everyone is continuously learning at the Bank - with so many learning and development sessions available on lots of different topics, as well as seminars given by people from all over the Bank, you will never get bored. 
     
    The African - Caribbean Scholarship was a brilliant opportunity. The Bank places a lot of emphasis on diversity and inclusion shown by programmes like the African - Caribbean Scholarship. I was able to attend many sessions where we got to develop and improve many skills, I was also appointed a great mentor, who helped me throughout my internship and I am still in contact with now. All the scholars had a really great Q&A session with the Governor - it was amazing that he took the time to speak to us. The African - Caribbean Scholarship helped me complete not only my internship at the Bank but also my final year of university and I have been lucky enough to come back on the Graduate Programme, something which may have not been possible for me without the scholarship programme.
